Judges · Chapter 21

Now the men of Yisra'el had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.
And the people came to the house of Elohim, and abode there till even before Elohim, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore;
And said, O 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) Elohim of Yisra'el, why is this come to pass in Yisra'el, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Yisra'el?
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
And the children of Yisra'el said, Who is there among all the tribes of Yisra'el that came not up with the congregation unto 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH)? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
And the children of Yisra'el repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Yisra'el this day.
How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Yisra'el that came not up to Mizpeh to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH)? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.
For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there.
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.
And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.
And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.
And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) had made a breach in the tribes of Yisra'el.
Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?
And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Yisra'el.
Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Yisra'el have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.
And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.
And the children of Yisra'el departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.
In those days there was no king in Yisra'el: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

1 Samuel · Chapter 1

Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the kohanim of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), were there.
And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) had shut up her womb.
And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) had shut up her womb.
And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the kohen sat upon a seat by a post of the heikhal of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH).
And she was in bitterness of nephesh, and prayed unto 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), and wept sore.
And she vowed a vow, and said, O 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
And it came to pass, as she continued praying before 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), that Eli marked her mouth.
Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.
And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my nephesh before 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH).
Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the Elohim of Yisra'el grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) remembered her.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Shemu'el, saying, Because I have asked him of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH).
And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), and there abide for ever.
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.
And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) in Shiloh: and the child was young.
And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.
And she said, Oh my lord, as thy nephesh liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH).
For this child I prayed; and 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
Therefore also I have lent him to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH); as long as he liveth he shall be lent to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH). And he worshipped 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) there.

1 Samuel · Chapter 2

And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), mine horn is exalted in 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH): my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.
There is none holy as 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH): for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our Elohim.
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) is a Elohim of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.
The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.
They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH)’S, and he hath set the world upon them.
He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.
The adversaries of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) shall be broken to pieces; out of shamayim shall he thunder upon them: 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.
And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) before Eli the kohen.
Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH).
And the kohen’s custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the kohen’s servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the kohen took for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.
Also before they burnt the fat, the kohen’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the kohen; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy nephesh desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH): for men abhorred the offering of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH).
But Shemu'el ministered before 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), being a child, girded with a linen ephod.
Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH). And they went unto their own home.
And 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Shemu'el grew before 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH).
Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Yisra'el; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the mishkan of the congregation.
And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.
Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH)’S people to transgress.
If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) would slay them.
And the child Shemu'el grew on, and was in favour both with 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), and also with men.
And there came a man of Elohim unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Mitsrayim in Pharaoh’s house?
And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Yisra'el to be my kohen, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Yisra'el?
Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Yisra'el my people?
Wherefore 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) Elohim of Yisra'el saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which Elohim shall give Yisra'el: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.
And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.
And I will raise me up a faithful kohen, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the kohanim’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
